We buy stuff because of the way it makes us feel.
Whether it’s a plate of nachos or a car…there’s more to the equation of a purchase than sustenance or transportation.
Those crispy tortilla chips with delicious melty cheese and that tan leather interior make you feel something.
Comfort. Sufficiency. Satisfaction. Pride.
My favorite pottery mug and batik robe bring me joy every time I use them.
On the flipside, my home is filled with hundreds of things I’ve purchased or been given over the years that don’t make me feel much of anything at all.
One of the aspects of coaching I love most is that it’s taught me how to create feelings like comfort, sufficiency, satisfaction and pride for myself ~ without needing stuff or other people’s approval to do so.
It’s wonderfully liberating! And one of my favorite things to teach my clients to do for themselves.
Because we live in a society where shopping is called “retail therapy” and a trip to the mall is considered a social outing, spending money on stuff is normalized.
Especially this weekend. You can’t escape it. Black Friday. Small business Saturday. Cyber Monday.
