An Invitation To Be Brave

This graphic was created using a photograph taken in the Chalkboard Room exhibit at the Centre Pompidou on a trip to Paris in 2015. The exhibit invited you to step into a room with green chalkboard walls on all four sides, pick up a piece of colored chalk and add your own words and marks.

I was instantly enveloped in an impressionistic, modern work of art created by people from around the world including myself.

Such a beautiful experience!

I loved how the chalkboard exhibit felt completely welcoming.

It made it so easy for people to put their own colorful creative mark on the ever-changing art.

What made the experience feel so special?

• I was completely surrounded by color.

The blending of all of the colored chalk used over time created a beautiful collage of soft color on each wall. I love color, so for me it made for a very inspiring atmosphere.

• I was part of a greater good.

Because hundreds or more likely thousands of people had added their marks before me it felt good to join in and add my own colorful wishes for the world to theirs.

• I was instantly creative. It was easy to jump right in, pick up a piece of chalk and write.

The simplicity of the creative act allowed me to be instantly creative without over-thinking the results.
I spent less than two minutes in that little room but I'll remember the experience for the rest of my life.

• I was given permission. Here it is again ~ permission.

The instructions to the exhibit gave me instant permission and the courage to contribute my creativity to the piece.

Think about it, would you ever dream of walking up to a work of art in a museum and adding a splash of paint because you thought it would enhance the piece? (An excellent way to land in jail!)

Yet, in this instance, I had permission and as you've heard me say a hundred times, giving yourself permission to be creative is the first small step!

• I was enchanted and inspired by something so simple and new.

I've never witnessed or been part of something quite like this art exhibit.

I invite you to choose one or more the following creative prompts inspired my experience in the chalk room to dive in and enjoy some low-pressure creative fun of your own.

# 1 ~ What delightfully doable creative experience would allow me to surround myself with color?

# 2 ~ What simple creative experience would help me to be part of the greater good?

# 3 ~ What low-pressure experience would help give me the courage to feel brave enough to express my creativity?

# 4 ~ What's one simple creative endeavor I can play around with today ~ just for the fun of it?

# 5 ~ How will I give myself permission to enjoy this creative experience?

If you struggle to give yourself permission to dive in and enjoy creative experiences, you’re not alone. Many of the people I work with come to me with that very same issue.

Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?

• I have so many ideas. I can’t decide where to begin.

• I’m afraid I’ll make the wrong choice and then I’ll be stuck. (Gentle reminder ~ If this is the case, you’re already stuck!)

• What if nobody likes it? Or worse everybody hates it?

• Why can’t I just do the damn thing?

• I should be able to figure this out on my own. (But then you don’t.)

If so, you’re a multi-passionate creative human and I can help!

I invite you to be brave.
